The Ultimate Secret: CURLY HAIR IS BEST CUT DRY
with Dry Cutting Expert Mr D
What I'll be talking about
In this episode, we’re talking about dry-cutting for curly hair and why you need this strategy for success in the salon instead of trying to cut curls wet.
Dry Hair cutting is exactly what it sounds like – cutting the hair dry without any water on it. Many stylists love this technique for curls and dabble in it for other textures with a mix of wet and dry cutting for various techniques. Dry Haircutting is suitable for all stylists and clients that like to see how the hair looks in its natural state without being stretched with water. It’s a hot topic in our industry and a strategy many of us (myself included) would need further training on to feel confident to offer this service to clients.
I work in the salon with a Dry Cut Expert who cuts all my clients before I colour them. I love it and my clients love it! We can colour the shape with a clear design after it has been cut and the client already feels confident and beautiful before I reach them to paint their hair.
There are obviously more technical reasons for cutting dry, but I wanted to start this blog by sharing how much my clients love dry cutting and why our industry needs to embrace it.

LET’S MEET OUR GUEST – Mr D
I reached out to dry-cutting and curl specialist, Mr D. Owner of Delilah Hair Studio (est 2007) – with 28 years of experience, he continues to share his knowledge as a trusted industry educator and product developer of Delilah Curl Creams. Along with being an ambassador of Hair-3Rs (a program designed for salon professionals to learn how to recognise, respond and refer to the signs of family violence in their clients), he donates $1 of each cream sold to the organisation.
I fell in love with Mr D on Instagram and my clients know and love his curl cream. In fact, we stock it in the salon because we have lots of curly hair clients that come to see me and the team at Suite 3 Hair in Sydney where I work.
Dry Hair vs Wet for cutting
Mr D cuts hair dry for all styles other than pixie haircuts, which he prefers to cut wet. He has a good look at the client before working on their hair and deciding what shape to start cutting. If you cut someone's hair dry you can see exactly what you are doing. You can see all the curls, coils and straight bits and the best way to get great results is to cut dry.
Every face is unique. It is about opening up the temples and sharing their best features. If someone wants a fringe or bangs, start there… and if they don’t want a fringe don’t start there. A great place to start on dry cutting is to make it about the client and adding a dry cut service to meet their needs. Start with education. I have shared links below this blog for Mr D and other dry cutters he loves to get you started with learning on social media.
