My $200 Rule:
The Secret to Zero No-Shows

What we'll be talking about
If you've had even one or two no-shows this year, that’s already too many. In this episode, I'll be talking about how you can stop ghosting and no-show clients with my profit-first deposit strategy.
What if I told you I haven’t had a single no-show in four years? That’s right — zero. And I run a small salon business that relies on clients to pay me a wage. If you’ve had even one or two no-shows this year, that’s already too many. But here’s the truth: no-shows aren’t just frustrating — they’re financially damaging and emotionally exhausting. And the worst part? They’re 100% preventable.
Show notes for episode 198
Let’s be honest — no-shows suck.
They waste your time, mess with your schedule, and cost you money. And if you’re still letting new clients book without paying a deposit… babe, you’re basically holding their spot for free.
I used to cross my fingers and hope everyone would show up. Now? I don’t even think about it.
Because I’ve got a simple rule in my salon:
No deposit = no booking.
And for new clients? That’s a $200 booking fee. Upfront. No exceptions.
I started this a few years ago as a freelancer, chair renter, and while bouncing between salon locations during the Covid recovery chaos. Wanna know how many no-shows I’ve had in the last 4 years?
Zero.
It’s not about being harsh. It’s about being fair — to myself, my time, and my paying clients. A deposit shows commitment. It filters out the time-wasters. And it tells your clients that you’re a professional who values your own work.
But Won’t People Push Back?
Nope. Not even my long-term regulars.
I recently expanded this policy to include every client — not just new ones. Now everyone pays a 30% deposit to secure their appointment. The only complaint?
“Can you show me how to do it? I want this in my salon too!”
No one’s angry. No one’s shocked. Because it’s clear, professional, and non-negotiable.
How You Can Do It Too
Set it up in your booking software. I use Timely to automate deposits and confirmations — and it’s a game changer. You can customise deposit amounts, set rules for late cancellations, and take back control of your schedule.
You’re not just a hairdresser — you’re running a business. It’s time your policies reflected that.
