What I'll be talking about

Wondering if browning out with reds is avoidable? In this episode, we answer that question.

Red hair is a classic. The tones may vary from trend to trend but the requests for reds and coppers in salons are here to stay. My Sydney-based business specialises in all things red and colour transformations & I have so many new client requests every week in this niche area of hair colouring. One of the biggest problems my clients have experienced is going to a salon that didn’t know how to formulate red or copper consistently, how to cover greys without root glow and something that’s so important that we don’t seem to be discussing as an industry is how to stop reds browning out.

Show notes for episode 124

Fading for clients that have red or copper hair colour applied by you in the salon can experience the dreaded “brown out” or dulling of their colour from time to time.

Stop combing their root formula with 6% through to the ends & try using pure pigments with semi or demi colours to boost the glow to avoid increasing porosity & risk of brown out.

.

2 techniques to prevent reds browning out

  1. LOWLIGHTING: The key to creating long-lasting dimensional redheads that pop is knowing when and how to utilise lowlighting. Try duplicating your root formula with a low peroxide or semi to deposit vibrancy without the dreaded “browning out”
  2. GLOW LIGHTING: The secret to adding vibrancy without darkness or depth. Works best with direct dyes or semis on clients needing vibrancy and zest refreshed without depth.

4 PRO TIPS TO PREVENT RED FADE:

  • Avoid Hot water washing at home
  • Avoid overwashing; red hair clients should only wash their hair 1-2 times a week & use a redhead-friendly dry shampoo on other days
  • Use colour deposit shampoos
  • Use products with sun protection and cover-up in the sun
