Haircolour strategies for Hairdressers

Do you get nervous when a client asks you “Which haircolour suits me”?

In this episode, we’re talking about haircolour suitability strategies and why you need to know these colour principles to become a fearless formulator! I am sharing the secret to formulating in the salon with proven colour principles adapted for hairdressers.

6 Hair colour categories proven to work for haircolour success

I want to share with you some helpful hints for selecting hair colours based on your client's colour suitability. Remember to always let the natural hair colour guide you when making your colour selection. There are 6 categories of colour suitability to consider when choosing hair colour.

  • 1. Deep – The person who has dark hair and dark eyes will always make the best brunette. To take them blonde is not the best choice. The deep tones are best.
  • 2. Light – The person with light hair, light eyes and light skin will make the best blonde. Their features can carry lightness. To go dark will create heaviness under the eyes and bring out imperfections in their skin.
  • 3. Subtle – There are clients with dark and light features as discussed, but let's not forget about the clients in the mid-range. Their hair and eyes are of a medium tone and their skin have a soft colouring to it. When selecting colours do not go too blonde or too dark, either will totally overwhelm the client. Keep their colours soft and subtle.
  • 4. Bright – Medium to dark-haired clients with light, jewel-toned eyes make this category. This is the client you can have fun with. Their skin can carry stronger looks, because they have so much colour reflected in their face from those sparkling eyes, so they can easily wear bright colours.
  • 5. Warm – The client with warm tones to their eyes, skin and hair is obviously better suited to staying warm. Enhance their colouring by adding orange-based reds. Try not to take this client too light because this can make their skin look sallow. Keep the hair colour tones rich and most importantly, warm!
  • 6. Cool – Clients with Cool eyes and skin combined with medium to dark hair need to stay away from yellow/orange tones in the hair. Keep the tones cool.
