Express Colour Correction Strategies
for Hairdressers
What we'll be talking about
In this episode, we’re talking about Express Colour Correction Strategies and what to do when unexpected outcomes or oopsies happen in the salon!
I want to start this podcast off with a question – is there such a thing as an express colour correction service? The dreaded C word of corrections usually sends shivers down hairdressers spines when they see it booked into the column. I detest the word redo and used to work somewhere that whenever a client was unhappy with anything to do with their hair or service in general they were automatically given a free service called a REDO. Whenever I saw it I thought YUK I have a REDO! And IT was rarely as difficult as I imagined. It could be as easy as 2 foils in the fringe or an all-over toner or perhaps they just didn’t know how to style their new fringe. All of this is an easy express service that need not stress anyone out.

EXPRESS CORRECTION TECHNIQUES ARE FOR MINOR ISSUES
In the colouring world, corrections can be express if it’s just a quick technique needing a minor adjustment or perhaps you view something at the basin area as you remove a colour & realise it needs a little extra finesse or brightness or customization. Or if you have a client that is unhappy with their cut you could offer them to come back in for a complimentary blowdry lesson to teach them how to style their new do. Whilst this could be a free service there’s still an opportunity to sell them retail products they need for styling and hot tools. So think of it more as being in the customer service industry and it’s an opportunity to serve them. Don’t worry that it is a redo or a revisit. It’s actually a positive if they come back and ask for your help.
BLEACH BATHS ARE NEVER A GOOD IDEA. HERE'S WHY…
- Mixing bleach into shampoo and adding to wet hair is never a good idea. A lot can go wrong. It’s not a predictable colour. Bleach can lump. Natural hair lifts etc etc
- Bleach Baths are problematic – I have had to help other colourists in-salon fix massive mistakes that were made by rushing and grabbing for the bleach to rub on something that looked too dark. Share the story of the client waiting for hours for me… it was a difficult job to remove the brassiness and an expensive mistake for the hairdresser. Sometimes the “fast option is not going to be the quick or express technique you are seeking”
- If the overall colour is a little darker than anticipate it will fade – but don’t just say, “YES YES… it will fade” to your client. You must help them and if needed add in a few foils or hand paint a few lighter pieces in a place they can see the lightness and they will feel better… this is a good way to offer a solution with an express correction technique
