Show notes for episode 32

curly hair needs more visibility and foundation training for hairdressers

I just knew I had to chat with a Curly Hair Expert. This could quite possibly be the first of a few podcasts on this topic… because let’s face it there is so much to learn around this. Confusion lies around whether to cut hair wet or dry and why… plus there’s the scissors or razor debate… and there are so many different textures and shapes of curl within the curly hair world. And that’s not to even mention the styling and whether to air dry or twist it & how to explore and find the right texture services for your clients.

In Episode 32 of the Colour Kristina Talks Podast I am chatting with Curly Hair Expert, Tara Walker, who is the owner of Mousey Browne hair salon. She  has pioneered the craft of Dry Haircutting, and in the process completely filled her appointment book. Since opening the doors of her rustic little salon in Sydney’s rag trade district  in 2016, Tara’s prediction of a consumer-led movement – away from spending hours in a salon, receiving multiple shampoos, being upsold treatments, scalp checks and manicures – has become a reality.

In a career highlight and justification of taking the road less travelled, Tara recently reached the finals of the ‘OneShot’ Hair Awards, in both Natural Texture and Cutting Transformation categories.

consumers are searching google for dry cutters and curly experts

Taras aesthetic is to create strength in shape and for clients to be ok with frizz. Her work is renowned in the curly hair community and frequently tagged by fellow hairdressers when they produce a curly hair photo they want her tick of approval on. If you would like to become a highly sought after stylist for curly hair clients, this episode is a must-listen!

The trick to curly hair styling? Run hands through the hair and go. Embrace natural texture. Yep, that's it! Sometimes you will need a water sprayer to mist the hair down and reapply some styling product. Embrace the frizz. Become a Frizz advocate. Tonging curls into the hair does not make you a Curly Hair Expert, however it could be a niche that you advertise you are a Tong Specialist for special events. The two types of curl are completely different and being good at tonging does not quantify you to be a Curl Expert.

Tara is changing the way our industry appraches curly hair one training event at a time. But she needs your help. As an industry we don't represent inclusivity for all hair textures evenly. Product companies need to create more natural texture products and Salon Owners need to offer training for frizz, free cutting, natural drying and embracing educational chats with clients to help them know how to love their natural hair.

Listen and learn why the Curly discussion and movement is incredible important for hairdressing, beauty and fashion to jump on board. Scroll to the bottom of this blog page to check out links for Tara and her salon and our resepctive instagrams.
