Avoid the 3 biggest mistakes Hairdressers make with Reds & Copper Hair Colouring

What we'll be talking about

Wondering how to avoid the 3 biggest mistakes when painting reds or coppers? In this episode, we answer that question.

Before we dive into this episode I wanted to share with you what’s been going on with me and my biz. I am in Sydney Australia and whilst I am recording this podcast we are in a lockdown. This has meant I have more time to work on my biz and am also stuck at home not being able to work in the salon.

The Colour Kristina Talks Podcast had a 4 week break. I had planned for it to be 2 weeks but somehow 2 weeks turned out to be 4 weeks. And that’s ok! It is important to not burn out and I need to spend time doing other things, like finding my inner artist and nurturing my creativity to be able to continue giving back to my community in the form of this podcast and sharing social media content.

My business had other goals that took priority over weekly podcasting. I took a month to create my submission for the 2021 Australian Hair Industry Awards, in the category of Independent Educator of the Year.

I am super proud of the entry & will be sharing what’s happening when finalists and winners are announced on my Instagram @colourkristina  so make sure you’re following me there.

I am also really excited to share with you that my online course doors are opening again & I am hosting some free live online classes very soon that can help give you a taste of what to expect if you join me in my program ‘Hair Painting for Redheads’. Registration links for my webinars and online course can be found at www.kristinarusell.com.au

I WANT YOU TO HAVE THE SAME SUCCESS I DID WITH REDS

Hair Painting for Redheads has allowed me to quickly scale and change the direction of my salon business. I have become a destination that redheads or anyone wanting to try a shade of red will travel to see for their next hair colour journey.

I have become clear on my niche areas of expertise and have redeveloped my approach to training Hairdressers to be brand-free and inclusive, working with Hairdressers in the US, UK, Asia, New Zealand and Australia… all while juggling life being a cat mum and loving partner to my fiance' Jaz.

And now, it's my mission to help inspire, motivate & equip other Hairdressers to do the same because I want you to experience the same success as I have since understanding the principles for hair painting natural reds, coppers and fashion requests without miscalculations and making mistakes.

WHAT ARE  THE 3 BIGGEST MISTAKES TO AVOID WITH REDS?

The Biggest mistake that hairdressers make with reds and coppers is the formulation and knowing your levelling system

    • Knowing your levels is only half the battle
    • Choosing the peroxide determines the lift or deposit & when we don’t apply to best peroxide for the client in our chair it can result in root glow or brownish results

The 2nd biggest mistake is hot roots:

    • This occurs when the roots are lighter than the rest of the hair
    • Hot roots look artificial and clients that are sensitive to people knowing they dye their hair would be unhappy with brighter roots because it is unnatural

The 3rd biggest mistake is banding:

    • Banding can occur when there is a heavy buildup of previous colours that have overlapped or perhaps the client has changed their mind every time they have a colour and this results in banding.
    • Here’s a pro tip for you – if you have a client that asks what is trending or what’s in this season and asks for it every single time. To avoid banding it’s best to do a double application on that type
