The Best Way to Approach Long Roots & Virgin Tints
What we'll be talking about
In this episode, we’re talking about how-to do Virgin tints and what the ideal rebooking cycle is for colour to avoid hot roots and banding.
Hot Roots, Banding, Inconsistency, Stripes, and unpredictable colour results are just a few of the things that regularly go wrong with hair colours in salons. Especially when it comes to dealing with clients that have left it too long between salon visits. During the last 18 months, our industry has been negatively impacted with forced closures due to lockdowns and this has pushed clients' appointments to be many months apart. I have recently been coming out of a 3 and a half month lockdown and am seeing clients with anywhere from 4 months regrowth to 12 months regrowth. I knew it would be challenging & I know I am not alone with feeling overwhelmed, overworked, and trying to navigate big jobs to be no probs, so I wanted to create this podcast to help you with my virgin tint formula and strategy to ensure you get it right the first time every time to minimize stress, product wastage, and expensive redos.

the modern approach to virgin tinting is fool proof
My modern approach to virgin tint application will always give you an even result and is my absolute go-to favourite secret sauce approach to tinting. And you know that I do a lot of reds, coppers and strawberry blondes… and yes you guessed it, those are all tints! I use this approach daily for hair colour success with grey coverage, fashion colours, high lift blondes and every other shade you can imagine with tinting. Let me share it with you:
- Step 1. Analyse the hair
- Step 2. Decide on the final look and formulate the roots to achieve your vision
- Step 3. Paint colour on roots
- Step 4. Immediately mix another bowl of colour that is lighter and brighter (this is explained in depth in the podcast episode, so make sure you listen to learn this!)
- Step 5. Paint the mid-lengths and ends colour on. Set timer for manufacturers instructions from the last brush stroke.
this is the only formula you'll ever need
I have the formula to help you with longer roots or virgin application tinting that works with every brand and is translatable to every trend.
Here it is: The mid-lengths and ends need to be LIGHTER and WARMER than your root formula. For example, if the Roots are tinted 7 level natural with 6%, you would mix 7 level natural and 7 level gold with 9% for the hair beyond the heat band. The peroxide gets you lighter and the colour choice will deliver the warmth needed.

Beware of so-called experts sharing their tips. Hair colour can be dangerous when not used properly or simply we don’t get ideal results when we are guessing our way through things.
