Show notes for podcast episode 85
The last 18 months have been an absolute shit show and our industry has been hit HARD. But something really incredible happened with hairdressers and salon owners exploring new ways of being in business and whether in fact, they wanted to work in the same capacity as they did pre lockdowns. Some hairdressers sought to spend more time off the salon floor and with their families, others leapt into online teaching and coaching (some for the very first time)… others quit their jobs and opened their own salon and some salon owners decided it was time to close and open another chapter in their professional lives.
Hairdressers have pivoted, flexed and made promises to themselves during lockdowns that can all come crashing down when salons reopen to getting absolutely smashed by anxious and pushy clients with longer roots, longer hair, and DIY box dye fix-ups to just name a few scenarios & it’s hard to keep clear boundaries.
The hairdressing industry has normalised conditions that would literally be illegal if you were a full-time employee on a minimum wage. Working more than 48 hours a week, and remember all the work you do that’s not with clients! Plus other things, such as;
- Not taking a break for longer than 6 hours a day
- Having at least 11 hours between the end of one shift and the start of another
- Plus some hairdressers, including bosses and self-employed freelancers, are not paid sick leave or holiday pay
We need to stop glamorizing being busy and accepting feeling burnout as our norm or something to aspire to.
That’s why I am so thankful that Maddi Cook has joined us for a conversation around setting clear boundaries.
LET’S MEET OUR GUEST – Maddi Cook
Maddi Cook is a mentor on a mission – to teach our industry how to stop winging it, and start thinking like business owners. She has taught thousands of hair and beauty pros how to price for profit and set boundaries to prevent the dreaded burnout… So they can create the businesses they daydreamed of when they first started out!
Maddi helps hairdressers scale their biz. She has a combination of free online education and paid memberships and courses, plus an incredible Instagram sharing loads of actionable tips and strategies.
HAIRDRESSERS TOP 3 FEARS FOR RAISING THEIR PRICES
The fears are universal. She has taught 9,000 people about pricing. Hairdressers and dog groomers. All tradies. Her strategies are flexible.
- The number 1 fear they are scared of losing their clients. The client's response is usually totally fine (so much so that is in fact underwhelming)
- The 2nd fear is geographical location may determine your pricing needing to be lowe
- Then others fears are self-worth & others might make comments around what they are worth
Many Hairdressers are wondering the same thing. Is it now the worst thing you can do after lockdown to raise their prices? This is highly due to the industry being 84% women and we are brought up to be people-pleasers, be nice to people, and then there is the other extreme that we have built something from scratch. We work really hard and our self-esteem is tied to our self-worth. We worry that people don’t value us and that reflects in our pricing.
Some of our clients have the most disposable income they have ever had at the moment during covid. They are still employed (even if 80% of wage) they are not travelling or spending and still have the money.
I openly share how I am guilty of emotional discounting and Maddie shares tips on imposter syndrome, establishing boundaries and stepping into the role of the boss in your business.
