Color Map for Hairdressers
WITH HAIR STYLIST + COLOR MAP CREATOR, JOSH COMEAUX
What we'll be talking about
In this episode of the Colour Kristina Talks Podcast we’re talking about Color Mapping for Hair Painters, so if you want more confidence to Paint + Know-Why every time, then this is the podcast for you.
American Hair Stylist Josh Comeaux has created something for Hair Stylists and Hair Painters PLUS CONSUMERS to help them achieve their best look, aptly named Color Map.
Ever thought how difficult predicting hair colour results on different levels of lightness can be? Hair colour swatch books are always made on white hair, which can make it difficult to predict results when working on bases that are yellow or darker than white.
And this becomes doubly difficult when clients ask to see a swatch or ask what exactly their result will be with traditional or Vivid Dyes.
In this episode of the Colour Kristina Talks Podcast we’re talking about color mapping for Hair Painters, so if you want more confidence to paint and know why every time, then this is the podcast for you.
American Hair Stylist Josh Comeaux has created something for hair stylists and hair painters PLUS CONSUMERS to help them achieve their best look, aptly named Color Map.
Color Map is a unique tool for Hairdressers, that is great for formulating colour before application on actual hair. This clever paper swatch book also helps the client and the artist get a visual of the outcome. Great for teaching colour theory and so much more!
Color Map is an incredible tool for:
- Formulating according to what level you are painting on
- Great for Formulating color before application on actual hair.
- Also helps the client and the artist get a visual of the outcome.

Color Map is the hair industry's ally in the education of colour theory.
Josh Comeaux was a stylist by birth and inventor by necessity. I stumbled across color map on instagram and reached out to him via instagram messenger and immediately setup a FaceTime video call to learn more and have a virtual meeting.
Josh has created something for hair stylists and hair painters PLUS CONSUMERS to help them achieve their best look. His brand’s catchphrase in we put the FUN in functional. And I love that!
Josh actually is NOT a Vivid's Artist, not is he a Colourist in fact. But he has found himself in difficult salon scenarios trying to please clients with that dreaded phrase, “Make my Hair Grey in one day” and realised there had to be a better way than painting on printer paper or napkins to try and predict tonal results for haircolours.
The features which make ColorMap the perfect tool for mixing color formulations, predetermining color outcomes based on starting color, and bringing awareness to clients concerning expectations are shared in greater detail in our interview PLUS I have shared a youtube link in the resource segment below.
Not only is Color Mapping great for training new team members or testing out colours before painting them on a head…it's also great for testing out new brands when you are changing jobs/locations/brands.
I am not sure about you, but I sure have discovered the hard way that a LEVEL 9 NATURAL TONER is not the same in every brand. Now you can test and measure swatches before painting hair as your canvas. Brilliant!! (insert happy dance here)
Josh shares his top 3 tips in this podcast:
1. There are NO set rules for Color Map (gotta love this!! Use it however you want to and paint for perfection or creativity)
2. This is an artist book. It allows Hairdressers to have a direct thought process. It may not be exactly true to tone but it does allow a measured and trackable result for every colour.
3. Color Map can help a client know what is possible and what is not possible. Show them the cards you are painting on based on what their hair has lifted to. Game changer for colour corrections and multi-visit jobs!
