Show notes for podcast episode 80
In this episode of the Colour Kristina Talks Podcast, we’ll be talking about becoming a Freelancer and things you'll need to consider or explore before taking the leap. There are so many different pathways to do this. I am chatting with Sydney-based Freelance Hair Stylist, Laura Spinney about how she did it.
Alternatively, if you are not interested in becoming a freelancer, but you are wanting to rebrand and attract a new tribe of clients we’ve got you covered too! If you are needing a strong dose of inspiration you’re in luck because Laura has a knack for shaking things up.
LET’S MEET OUR GUEST – Laura Spinney
Laura Spinney has developed a growing reputation for creating Mullets, Shags, Wolf cuts and bold colours that are as varied as her salon clientele. Although classically trained and having a love for precision cutting and long hair, Laura breaks the boundaries of shape and texture which is evident when you see her work on social media or in hairdressing media publications.
Laura also educates stylists on how to train their eyes and cut with an instinct to suit clients rather than a regimented approach. When she's not cutting or educating, Laura is generally onset in the editorial world and working with some international celebs like Detox and The PussyCat Dolls. She worked in commission salons before changing to work as a Freelancer in 2020. And her personal branding and client messaging across social media as a shag specialist and advocate for gender-neutral pricing leads her to be booked out months in advance.
Laura Spinney is the new generation of hairstylists carving their own path on their own terms within a new way of doing business in a salon. She was a member of the 2019 Australian Fame Team & has travelled with creative teams to share her passion for our industry.
Recently Laura has turned her hand to make-up and after completing a course in 2020, now offers both hair and makeup on set.
LAURA’S PRO TIPS FOR BECOMING A FREELANCER
All business owners learn along the way. Some plans come to fruition and others are based on experiments or mistakes that turn into lessons. Laura and I agree that being a Freelancer is not the only option for creatives seeking flexibility in our professions, however, it’s the business structure that works best for both of us in our careers.
Laura shares her tips and things you must consider when becoming a Freelance Hair Stylist:
- Accountant – find a good one! You might need to interview or chat with a few before deciding who is the best fit for you
- Look at appointment software – there are free programs and paid subscriptions. Find the features that you need and decide on the software that suits your business plan
- Have a discussion with the salon owner you are at & see what opportunities are available before taking the leap to rent a chair or find a booth rental
- You don’t need a website – avoid this unnecessary expense in your first phase of going freelance & utilize free options, such as social media
- You can rebrand or build your business on social media with micro-influencers that model your hairstyles and cuts to take some cool photos to use on your website or social media. Laura only did cuts she wanted to do & collaboration is a strong point to make. This is how she unknowingly started the process
- Laura eventually engaged with a graphic designer to simplify her message with fonts and branding & in reality the first year going freelance is all about spending money. It is a big investment! Be prepared to invest in yourself.
- HOT TIP! Have a 2nd phone for business & utilize the ‘do not disturb’ mode when you are not in business hours to avoid overwhelm and clients pushing your boundaries
