How to prevent hot roots on the hairline with Reds and Coppers
What I'll be talking about
Wondering if glowing hairlines are the norm for red and copper clients? Or could there be an easier way? In this podcast, we will answer that question.
Is the time for retouching reds the same as any other retouch? In a recent survey I conducted in my Hair Painting for Redheads Bootcamp, it seems to me that many hairdressers find the longer the color is left at the hairline, the hotter it becomes. Hot roots. But to cover the gray, doesn't it need to sit at least 40 minutes?
Interesting question. And one that is being asked my newbies and experienced hair stylists.
Show notes for episode 113
In this podcast I’m covering:
- Should you start at the front or the back with tinting to avoid hot roots?
- Why hot roots occur more with reds than blonde and brunettes?
- An easy recipe to avoid glowing hairlines for greying clients wanting red or copper hair colour
Should you start front or back of head to avoid hot roots?
Front or back? Where do you start? Does it really matter where you start the application of permanent colours in terms of colour results?
Let me break it down for you:
- I always start at the back to have easy predictable end results
- It is easier to rinse the back if something starts to go wrong than the front
- The hair around the face hairline is sometimes finer or could be more coarse. This might require a different formula and by starting at the back you have time to decide what to do whilst you begin painting. This helps you to work in a reasonably professional manner and appointment time.
- There is no need to start at the front of the head with reds & there is no evidence this leads to root glow because root glow is caused by miscalculations in the formula (and not by where you start applying a colour)

PRO TIPS FOR TO AVOID RED ROOT GLOW ON HAIRLINES:
- Whatever the percentage of grey is you need that percentage of natural in the mixture. That’s it! Don’t overthink it. The more grey the more N or natural. 25% grey needs 25 % natural.
- When you get your formulation correct you should process for the full development time according to your brand & not wash the colour off too soon to avoid root glow
- Hot roots occur more with reds than any other colour because of the 5-6-7-8 levelling system for hair painting redheads (hint: every level is a different colour)
