What I'll be talking about
In this episode of the Colour Kristina Talks Podcast we’re talking about how the hair industry is very gendered. We are taught mens cuts and womens cuts & most salons today still have gender or sex based pricing. I am going to share why you need to learn gender-affirming verbage when working in the hair and beauty industry plus introduce you to a global alliance called the Dresscode Project.
- Learn how you can make your space safe for LGBTQ2S+ clients (in Australia LGBTQI+)
- We talk about some barriers to service that LGBTQS+ people encounter
- We talk about gender-free pricing & what the hashtag #lengthnotgender represents
- We talk about misgendering and pronouns and how we can avoid this happening
- Plus several things you can implement immediately into your salon or babershop, plus processes that would require training and where to access support to do so

My mission as an Educator is to use my voice and public profil platforms to make changes in the way we look at “gender free” hairand to understand the concept of consultation & hairdressing skills that are based on hair inspiration, as opposed to gender sterotypes.
I am proudly the Australian Ambassador of the Dresscode project. The DCP is an allianc of salons providing safe spaces without judgement for the LGBTQI+ community.
read more about the dresscode project alliance
Dresscode Project is a global initiative that started in 2017 with the objective of creating Gender Affirming salons and barber shops for LGBTQ2S+ clients.
When you're transgender, non-binary or gender non-conforming getting your hair cut can create a lot of anxiety. This is why the Dresscode Project provides member salons/shops and stylists/barbers with ongoing resources and training in order to create an affirming and positive experience for all people.
Gender Free Hair Cut Club
As a part of their membership in Dresscode Project our salons sometimes host a Gender Free Haircut Club (GFHC). Our Gender Free Hair Cut Clubs bring top professional hairstylists into Dresscode Project shops and salons to create a fun, affirming and free haircut experience to LGBTQ2S+ youth.
