The Best Way to Remove Box Dye from Hair
What we'll be talking about
In this episode, we’re talking about how to remove BOX DYE with Colour Strippers and Decolorisers and why you need to know how to lift artificial pigment without damaging the hair quality or lightening your client's natural hair in the salon.
The word strip or stripper might make you cringe, but I am using it because it’s what clients say. They want us to be able to wave a magic wand sometimes and to simply strip their box dye away.
We need to learn to speak client to clients in a clear and easy to understand language. You and I both know there’s no magical cure for box dye disasters. And there are so many choices at your local professional hair supplies store it can be overwhelming. That’s where I come in. I have tested many options and one of my niche areas of expertise is colour correction. I have been using colour reducers (which is what I like to call Colour Strippers) since I was an apprentice to fix packet dye or my own mistakes when I miscalculated something & I love the science behind it. This podcast episode is created to help you strategize how to remove heavy colour buildup from your clients hair. Could be box dye. Could be salon dye. The colour stripper strategy that I am about to share with you will work on both. Are you feeling excited? Or nervous? Or a little overwhelmed? Or all three? It’s ok, lovely! I’ve got you covered. Whatever your reason is for listening to this podcast when you saw the title. I’ve got you covered! I am here to help you. I suggest you get comfortable with a cup of tea or your favourite drink and settle into this episode with an open mind to learn new techniques, or to be reminded of something you might already know but have been too nervous to try again because the last time you did you and your client were both unhappy.

COLOUR REDUCTION SOUNDS BETTER THAN STRIPPER
The words Colour Reducer or a Colour Reduction, I believe implies you are reducing the amount of colour in their hair but not overpromising that it will be all stripped out or all removed. I want to start by sharing my favourite product to remove permanent dye is NOVA Color Eliminator. It is a 2-part product that requires equal mixing of the 2 solutions in the packet. No peroxide. This product only lifts artificial pigment. It does not lighten or lift the client's natural hair.
Pro tips for removing box dye:
- Avoid using colour remover or stripper sachets that contain bleach
- Avoid using peroxide to lift out box dye because when overlapped onto natural hair zones you will also lift the hair, which results in patchy unwanted blobs of orange
- Always test strand all products you intend to use
- Book consultations with test strands before the day of colour services to ensure enough time to test all variables and quote correctly for services to be effective and profitable
- De Lorenzo Colour Eliminator is the best colour stripper/reducer on the market that only lifts permanent and semi-permanent dye without bleaching the natural
- Direct dyes are not the same as box dye & these products need alternative options for removalListen to episode 78 of the Colour Kristina Talks Podcast to learn the best way to remove box dye from hair!
