Spilling the tea: Facebook Hairdressing group No-No's

What we'll be talking about
Show notes for podcast episode 166
Here’s the thing: 90% of all Hairdressers will give a Redhead Hot Roots. 2/3 of those stylists believe the only way that you can mix and formulate a beautiful Redhead is by using a particular colour brand, but your salon doesn’t stock them.
So you feel that you won’t be able to do it because someone told you the colours you stock in the salon can’t create beautiful Red & Copper formulas.
Sound relatable?
Here’s the tea: if you want to avoid messing up Reds, you have to learn how to combine Creative Colour Theory with Science. But most people end up just guessing formulas or blaming the brand they use and – shocker! — it doesn’t work!
Picture this: you’re bleaching a client and you want to create an icey platinum like you saw on a superstar hairdresser's Instagram page, so you jump into your favourite hairdresser group and upload a photo asking for help.
More than 50 comments quickly appear. Shit! This is getting really confusing now. Some people are saying you need Pulp Riot, others say Wella, but you only stock Goldwell toners.
F*ck! You’ve scrolled further and you find a Goldwell supporter but they’ve suggested using 9P and 9G. Why would you use a pearl and a gold? OMG!
We’ve all seen these threads of doom in a group. And where did it lead to the last time you were involved?
Formulas are not the same as recipes and looking for advice online can lead to disaster. There are hair-raising suggestions within social media groups, with absurd ideas, such as adding a splash of black into a clear for platinum. Be wary of the so-called “gurus” peddling generic formulas for a “clean blonde” as 9.31 or 10V because it won’t work on every client or starting level.
The only Facebook groups I recommend are private student communities included in paid online courses or coaching programs. Do your homework. Find the best mentor and educator to help you in your salon business.
Within my all-time favourite online course, Hair Painting for Redheads, my students have direct access to me to help with formulations in a private student community, that’s currently hosted on Facebook. All students have access to the online tutorials, and use the group to bounce ideas off each other, and to ask me for customised formula and technique advice. It’s an awesome way that I can continue to nurture and support my students.
