I am a Haircolour Expert that specialises in complex colour corrections and creative Hairpainting, which can tend to attract fussy or hard to please clients from time to time based on my expert reputation. When you have clients that are fussy or have been unhappy for a long time it’s important to acknowledge the emotions first, and then chat about their hair.
Sometimes you need to consider saying no to a client if you believe you cannot meet their expectations. I discuss alternative options for the “N” word and consider both hairdresser and salon owners point-of-view on this topic, and more importantly the client. We as Salon Professionals, need to ensure every client has a professional experience with your guidance to what’s possible.
My favourite 2 questions to begin a consultation are:
Tell me about your hair
What would you like to achieve today?
2 common scenarios that can be challenging for consultations + shared reality:
Problem – Hair is too damaged to colour
Solution – offer a test strand and a treatment and an educational consultation with homecare package and rebook
Problem – Hairdresser does not have long enough time allocated
Solution – ask salon manager or receptionist for help to reshuffle some people, or text your next client if solo operator, or do what you can and rebook them for a longer session another day. My HOT TIP is to spend extra time with a new/transformation/correction client than a standard consultation. Give them a quote for today and for the next couple of bookings.
