Fear? Not If You Use these 7 Must-Know Hair Colour TechniquesThe Right Way!

Most Hairdressers start colour training by applying Global Tints or Semi-Permanents, however, not everyone is taught the theory and strategies behind formula decisions.

In this podcast, I’ll be sharing with you the 7 most important colours to learn for haircolour success. This might mean you’ll need to go back and revisit some of the fundamental colour principles and attend some foundational training again to rebook these skills, and that my friend is totally ok! In fact, I encourage you to do so.

7 must-know techniques for haircolour success:

These fundamental haircolour techniques are integral for your success at every stage of hairdressing. Trend to Trend. Brand to Brand.

Listed below is a checklist of the 7 core foundational solid colour techniques that every Salon Professional Hairdresser should know how to do with confidence.  If you feel like you would not know how to approach one or some of these it's time to take a colour refresher course or invest in hair painting education to support your salon to succeed.

  1. Semi-permanent colour application with a bowl and brush
  2. Semi-permanent colour application with a bottle
  3. Permanent colour grey coverage for a client with a 4-6 retouch
  4. Permanent colour for a first-time grey coverage request
  5. Highlift Tint using a special lift or 11 series in permanent colour
  6. Classic Copper Haircolour using permanent colour
  7. Fashion Colour that is 1-2 shades lighter than clients natural colour

Being professionally grounded helps you to become a Fearless Formulator

I want to share with complete transparency that I have not always found hair colour theory and hair painting easy. In fact, I used to really struggle with my formulations and needed more time than most hairdressers to complete my apprenticeship and be ready for my hairdressing license. I needed more education and I attended loads of training. I still invest in several courses every year to elevate my craft.

Sometimes people assume that I don’t make mistakes and that I found colouring easy. I can share with you it was one of the hardest things to learn, but I worked really hard at it to ensure I could take hairdressing from a job drought with stressful mistakes to a lucrative career that I love. I encourage you to revisit these fundamental colours to ensure you're able to meet every client's expectations and make suggestions for techniques they need. If knowing how to paint a Classic Copper or achieve grey coverage with fashion colours, including redheads, you're in luck! I dive deep into both of those strategies and techniques in my online program Hair Painting for Redheads. The doors will be opening again soon.
