Niching Down to Grow a Salon Business you'll love
with Chelsea De Main

What we'll be talking about
In this episode, we’re talking about finding your unique sense of style and why you need to niche down to grow a salon business you’ll love.
Chelsea De Main is the Owner and Founder of Eye Am Hair. She has practised her craft around the world in salons, as an educator, for runway shows, wedding hair, festival and event hairdressing in Greece, London, Melbourne and now in Hobart Australia.
I’ll be talking with Chelsea in this podcast about how she has combined her love of travel, festivals, curly hair and community events into a career that is as unique as her clients' bespoke hairstyles and colours.
Inspired by her desire to create a space with an interesting adaptation of the traditional idea of a mainstream salon, Eye Am Hair and Nancy the copper caravan was born in 2018. Nestled amongst a hub of pop up businesses in an edible garden precinct, the vans have grown an ethical, and environmentally conscious following and a vibe that has attracted a 5 star tribe.
We’ll be talking about how Chelsea has cultivated a freelancer salon and what motivates her to continue to create unique opportunities for herself and her team in their niche areas of expertise.

niching down to create biz you'll love
The word niche is talked about a lot in our industry and it’s something that many hairdressers, podcasts, educators, and business coaches are suggesting for hairdressers to focus on in a COVID (lockdown) recovery or simply to scale their business in a direction that you love. It is OK to niche down to do what you are good at and what you love and stop doing everything else.
Listen to episode 67 of the Colour Kristina Talks Podcast to fall in love with hair all over again. This podcast is really unique. We believe you'll listen and feel inspired to find your inner artist again (just in case it's feeling a little lost).
your vibe attracts your tribe & your dream clientele
Eye Am Hair has become an institution for cultivating inclusive community events for the team and guests to enjoy and conceptualise hair salon installations at festivals, the most popular being submissive salon and sensory salon. Chelsea and her partner love music and art festivals, and they wanted to live in the space of festivals as a small business owner seeking connection whilst attracting new clients.
Their salon teams travel to do festival hair regularly & it's so interesting to learn what their tool kits include (spoiler alert: nothing like a bridal kit & might contain things you would usually find on a building site).
Prepare to be inspired! We chat about Eye Am Hair's niche offerings in-depth, including:
1. Festival Hair
2. Curly Hair
3. Vegan Hair & cruelty-free products
4. Gender Free Hair
5. Curly Hair Weddings (this is a niche that attracts attention far and wide because nobody else is offering this)
Our industry feels divided at the moment with traditional salon owners and teams and the emergence of more freelancers.
We are not suggesting that one is better than the other, but simply put there are different career pathways that are more flexible and more structured that bring with it certain opportunities. Both can be stressful and both are hard work.
In my podcast, I try to represent all sides of the conversation & in particular to inspire, educate and motivate our listeners with tips to scale their biz and feel connected with other hairdressers across the globe.
Eye Am Hair is a mixed-mode salon. This means it's a happy combination of Freelancers and Employees.
Because…well because, why not?!
It's time to create your dream salon business. Chat soon hair lovers x K
