Show notes for podcast episode 158
LET’S MEET OUR GUEST – CRYSTAL GREEN
I’m chatting with Podcast Host, Hair Stylist and Educator Crystal Green. Also know as Your Hair Mentor on social media and in her education biz.
She has been a stylist for 20 years. She lives in Reno, Nevada in the US and she loves participating in local events. She has a podcast that is sort of taking over her life, just like mine, but we both love podcasting. She also creates online hair education and is the author of the ebook Salon Genius, available on Amazon.
After starting three successful salon businesses in three separate states, she finally landed on the idea of creating something digital to help those she wasn't able to in person. This is where the idea of “Your Hair Mentor” as an online space started. As it continues to blossom, her mission is to be able to help more women get to know and love their hair every day. It is truly her love child.
Crystal and I want you to stop saying the word “just” before hairdresser. For example, when you’re asked what career you have, we’d love to hear you saying “I am a salon owner” or “I am a hairdresser”, and to feel proud of being such an important part of your local community. It’s empowering!
Too often we put the word “just” into that sentence and it minimises your self-worth. An example would be, “Hi! My name is Kristina, I’m a Hairdresser, but I just work 3 days a week renting a chair in a little salon”. Can you feel the difference?
What is the sacred chair?
Consultations are the key to your success as a Hairdresser. The salon chair is a sacred space for the client experience.
It is important to know how we can best serve our clients without our ego preventing this. They don’t expect us to be a guru or to have all the information about every aspect of hair and world current affairs. They want to be seen, touched, feel a connection and have their hair washed/coloured/styled. Don’t overcomplicate it.
We need to contribute to the happiness in their hair. We are not perfect. We don’t need to be perfect. What does the client sitting in your chair need? It’s so important to know how to use the tools and techniques with strong communication skills. This is where working with Crystal as a coach could really help you.
Crystal helps hairdressers in her coaching sessions to shift their mindset around being an artist and what hair means culturally. It’s important to then talk about who you serve, take the ego away, and become the mentor for your client in the salon environment.
